Discover the Caribbean National Park Islas del Rosario that is less than one hour by boat from Cartagena and enjoy the white sandy beaches and crystal clear water while snorkeling through coral reefs full of exotic fishes. On your way to Santa Marta you get to see the exotic Totumo volcano before arriving to Colombia’s first colonial city.

Here you will learn more about Colombia’s history and its famous “Libertador” Simon Bolivar as well as see the colonial center.

Visit the famous National Park Tayrona, known as one of the top nature destinations on the Caribbean Coast of South America and go hiking in the tropical forest to get to Tayrona’s impressive beaches. There you will also explore ancient indigenous trails in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Day 1: Beautiful Cartagena

Cartagena de Indias is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in America. Its historic centre, walled by the fortifications built in the colonial era, conserves its original architecture and is full of colours that will fill the visitors with the Caribbean life and joy. Its fascinating history as one of the pearls of the time and largest slave port in the colonies, make it a place of big importance and colonial highlights.

The City-Tour will start visiting the Cerro de La Popa, a former Augustinian convent rising 150 meters above the city, where you will have the best view of Cartagena. After that, visit the largest military construction ever built by the Spaniards in their colonies, the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas. Then, head to the historic centre where you can visit the plazas, churches and the most beautiful and important streets and buildings of the city.

Day 2 : National Park Islas del Rosario (B,L)

The Islas del Rosario are a crystal clear water paradise, ideal for watching colourful coral reefs and marine wildlife in the shallow ocean. Located only 45 km from Cartagena Bay, a speedboat will take you from the historic center of Cartagena to Isla Grande (1 hour). This National Park protects unique underwater ecosystems, mainly coral reefs, inhabited by a multitude of invertebrate species and a big variety of fish in all colors you can imagine! Another highlight of this pristine environment are the beautiful beaches that invite to relax in the sun, where you will a typical lunch. Arriving on the island you will have time to go swimming, snorkeling or kayaking

Day 3: Totumo and transfer to Santa Marta (B)

45 minutes from Cartagena, driving on the coastal road between Barranquilla and Santa Marta, you will make a stop to get to see a really unique volcano. The mud volcano Totumo is a 20 meter high exotic and natural wonder, surrounded by numerous lakes that can be seen with a beautiful view from the top of the volcano. Afterwards you will drive up the coast to visit the colonial city of Santa Marta.

Day 4: Santa Marta

In Santa Marta, the oldest colonial city of Colombia, you will learn more about the history and independence of Colombia on a city tour through Santa Marta. On this tour, you will visit the most important historical places of the city and learn about the life of Simon Bolivar, “the Liberator”. We start with a visit of La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the place where Simon Bolivar passed away in December 1830.

Afterwards enter the Bolivarian Museum and learn about the most important events in Simon Bolivar’s life and the historical context of Colombia during that time. Continue to the center of Santa Marta and visit to the oldest cathedral in the country. We finish with a walk through the historical third street, visiting the boardwalk of the city with its impressive buildings and monuments.

Day 5 : National Park Tayrona

With its white sandy beaches surrounded by rocky atolls and tropical forests, washed off by the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Tayrona Park is one of the most impressive destinations of Colombia. It offers a variety of trails that infiltrate the rainforest and archaeological sites, which were of great importance for pre-Columbian Cultures. After arriving at the entrance of the national park, we begin the hike from Canaveral through the tropical forest and along some beaches up to Arrecifes (approx. 1 hour) and continue to paradise like beaches of Arenillas, Piscina and Cabo San Juan (approx. 1 hour), where we have time to enjoy a swim in the sea. Afterwards we will bring you back to Santa Marta, from where you can continue your trip.

All activities are organized and guided by the participating communities, which are directly supported with health and education projects within their villages. Day 1: Flight Medellín – Nuquí (L, D)

Arrive in the morning in Nuquí, where your guide from the Community Tourism Alliance will meet you and bring you by boat to your hotel. The hotel is located at Guachalito beach, half an hour down the coast from Nuquí. On the way, enjoy the incredible landscapes where the mountains descent to the sea. After a fresh lunch, enjoy a free afternoon on the beaches of Guachalito, where you can snorkel, swim or just relax in a hammock in front of your eco-hotel.

Day 2: Community visits: Pristine Jungle River in Jovi & mangrove forest of Coqui (B, L, D)

After breakfast you visit the Joví community. A local guide will provide information about the community tourism organisation of the locals, before boarding a chingo, an artisanal canoe. Travel by chingo up the Joví River, a shallow, slow moving river where you can see birds and other animals. After an hour, you arrive at a waterfall in the rainforest, where you can take a dip in the crystal-clear water in the middle of the jungle. Return by chingo to Joví. Afterwards trave to the neighbouring community of Coquí, where you will enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by some of the best cooks in the Choco region. Coquí is located on a small island surrounded by mangrove forest. Explore the nearby mangrove forests, which is considered to be one of the best-preserved mangroves in Colombia. Here, you can spot rare birds and tropical plants. After the tour you return by boat to your eco-hotel at Guachalito beach.

Day 3: Community visit: Jungle hike, tropical frogs, waterfalls & hot springs in Termales (B, L, D)

This morning you travel to Termales, a small community south of Guachalito. Upon arriving in Termales the guides from the local community tourism association will lead you on a jungle path where you can observe different species of colourful tropical frogs as well as other animals like birds and monkeys. You arrive at a four picturesque waterfalls, which form wide, deep pools where you can swim. After relaxing at the waterfall you return to the community of Termales. At the end of the trail you will find a natural hot spring, for which the town is named. Here you can relax before returning by boat to Guachalito Beach.

Day 4: Depart from Nuquí (B)

This morning after breakfast you return to Nuquí by boat to take your flight back to Medellin.

La Guajira – Community Adventure, Desert & Ocean

The Guajira Peninsula is Colombia’s northernmost point. The dry and hot desert climate hast kept it largely isolated, which is why La Guajira remains one of these special places where travelers still feel off the beaten track.

Explore the endless beaches hidden behind immense dunes, get to know local communities and their semi-nomadic way of live in the desert and visit remote fishing villages embedded into a landscape of sand.

Day 1: The Indigenous Capital of Colombia, Salt Mines and Cabo de la Vela (B, L, D)

Early in the morning we will start our tour towards Uribia. Explore the “indigenous capital of Colombia” on a short city tour and enjoy a breakfast in a local restaurant. Later visit the industrial and artisanal salt mines of the region, which play a great role in the local economy. We continue the route towards Cabo de la Vela, where we have lunch. In the afternoon meet the Ipuana Clan, take a walk with their representative and learn about their agriculture-based lifestyle, their perspective on tourism and their sacred place. You can enjoy the view from Cerro Kamaichi before you arrive at the lighthouse of Cabo de la Vela to watch the sunset. Spend the night at a typical guesthouse.

Day 2: Dunes of Taroa, Punta Gallinas and the Northernmost Lighthouse of South America (B, L, D)

After breakfast we leave for Punta Gallinas. On the way we cross the desert and stop at the Dunes of Taroa, where we take a walk up the dunes and along the beach. Later, we visit the northernmost point of South America, where a symbolic lighthouse was constructed. After lunch explore Punta Agujas and enjoy some time at the beach.

Day 3: Beach time in Mayapo (B, L)

In the morning we leave Punta Gallinas. We will stop in Mayapo where you can relax at the beach, try some watersports or enjoy a massage. After lunch you can enjoy some more beach time before we return to Riohacha.
